Stained Glass Windows in the Churches of Harrisonburg

Emmanuel Episcopal Church
History of the Virginia Episcopal Church

The focus of this window is on the organization and life of the Episcopal Church in Virginia during the
early 19th century. The images of Bishops on horseback recall the challenges of providing leadership and
organization to the church in an era when travel was difficult and there was considerable confusion and
uncertainty as to what the future would hold for the Episcopal Church in Virginia. One of the vignettes
shows the Wren Building of the College of William and Mary – a reference to James Madison, Virginia’s
first bishop, native of Port Republic and first cousin of President James Madison.

In Memoriam: The Honorable John Paul (1883 – 1964).
