was the last surviving member of her family. Siblings who predeceased her were sisters Bertha Gibson, Lillie
Monroe, Ruth Coffman, Virginia Surface, and brothers, John Albert, Jr., Charles, and Delemo Surface. Martha
had a lifelong devotion to her family. She loved preparing recipes that she inherited from her mother. The cookie
jar was always filled with cookies for her grandchildren, even after they grew up and established homes of their
own. Reading and crafts, including sewing, crocheting, and knitting, provided hours of enjoyment for her. She
loved knitting for her great-grandchildren. Throughout her many years of dedication to her church, she mentored
other women, who met regularly to work on craft projects and helped to make several quilts. She worked in the
family business, Painter’s Roofing and Heating, and was a substitute rural mail carrier for a number of years. She
was an active member of Annex UMC, where she helped establish a senior citizen’s group. The family would
like to express appreciation for the love and support given to Martha by the Hospice of the Shenandoah and the
caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care. Memorial donations were to made to Annex UMC, 1570 New Hope
Road, Staunton, Virginia, 24401; and Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, Virginia 22939.
Arrangements by Henry Funeral Home. A funeral service was held at Annex UMC Mar. 10th; pastors Russell
Heinrich and Debra Copeland officiated. Burial followed at Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were
nephews Bobby Coffman, Steve Surface, Forest Surface, Wayne Surface, Jr., Eddie Surface, and Gary Wimer.
Honorary pallbearers were Daniel Baker, Gary Baker, Roger Baker, Kenneth Baker, Jeff Baker, Stephen Lambert,
Larry Wills, Johnny Lane, James Lafon, Stephen Shull, Edwin Flesher, and Harrison Hite.

Elizabeth Ann (Jackson) Surface, 63, wife of Forest A. Surface of Fishersville, died Oct. 7, 2010, at
Augusta Health. She was born Dec. 19, 1946, in Newport News, a daughter of the late Marshall C. Jackson and
Evelyn (Smith) Jackson Rowe. Mrs. Surface was previously employed by V.S.D.B. as a house parent in Battle
Hall. She was a member of Annex UMC. In addition to her husband, family members include two sons and a
daughter-in-law, Curtis E. Stilley Jr., and Daniel W. and Jennifer A. Hite, all of Staunton; a daughter, Kristina M.
Surface and her fiancé, Jordan L. Turner of Williamsburg; and special friends, Faye Davis, Connie Losh, and
Carolyn Spangler. She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Louise Desco, and a niece, Tonia M. Owens. A
funeral service was conducted Oct. 11t at Annex UMC by the Rev. Russell L. Heinrich. Family burial followed at
Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dave Davis, Johnny Lane, Larry Wills,
Stacey McCray, Joe Siron, Chad Cash, and James Lafon. Honorary pallbearers were employees of V.S.D.B. The
family received friends at Henry Funeral Home, Staunton. Memorials were to made to the Roofing Fund of
Annex UMC, 1570 New Hope Road, Staunton, VA 24401.

Ella Mae (Peters) Warren, 86, widow of Allen Graham “Pete” Warren, of Staunton passed away Sep. 6,
2014, at her residence. Mrs. Warren was born Nov.16, 1927, in Rockbridge Co., a daughter of the late Charles
Harry and Emma Macell (Harper) Peters. Ella retired as a presser from Genesco and was a member of Annex
UMC. Mrs. Warren enjoyed walking at Augusta Health and Fitness Center with her friends. She also enjoyed
spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, and crafts. In addition to her husband and her parents, Mrs.
Warren was preceded in death by three grandsons, Todd Warren, Steve Spears, and Carl Lee Warren; a special
nephew, Michael Thompson; and two brothers, Charles Peters and James Paul Peters. Mrs. Warren is survived by
a son, Charles Graham “Chip” Warren of Staunton; two daughters, Lois W. Myers and her companion Zane
Davenport of Staunton and Alice Fay Moran and her husband Melvin of Greenville; five sisters, Lucy Pederson
and her husband David of Swoope, Gertrude Widner of Staunton, Nellie Lemasters of Burnsville N.C., Lillie
Altizer of Fishersville, and Alice Meharg of Cerritos, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Shawnie, Kelly, John, Jason,
Kady, Deidre, Jimmy, and Rosie; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and
nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law also survive. The family received friends in Coffman Funeral Home.
A Celebration of life was conducted Sep. 10th in Annex UMC by Revs. Debra Colbert Copeland and Russell
Heinrich. Burial followed in Augusta Memorial Park. Active pallbearers were Jason Warren, John Myers, Troy
Pusey, Chris Acord, Jeremy Breeden, and J. T. Myers. It was suggested those desiring make memorial
contributions to Annex UMC, 1570 New Hope Road, Staunton, Virginia 24401.
