Belle Grove went through several modifications. When adding the frame extension on the west end of the house (at left in the photo at right), windows were converted to doors to provide access from the interior of the house. An addition was also built in the corner of the ell in the early twentieth century. Curiously, this addition had three living levels as opposed to two in the original structure.

The porches on the east and south sides were not part of the original plan, but probably replaced smaller, more stately pediments in an effort to update the house.
